How Chinese Folk Dancers Continue to Practice During Quarantine

For the Xuejuan Dance Ensemble, practice continues despite a stay-at-home order in Virginia. According to the ensemble’s director, Xuejuan Feng, teaching classical Chinese dance online is difficult because it requires dancers to have shen yun, or “body rhythm,” but her students still meet virtually to practice. Chinese folk dance reflects regional and cultural differences, and offers Chinese-American dancers a connection to their ancestors. The pandemic has led to the cancellation of exciting national competitions, but for some it has offered more time to hone their flexibility, skills, and fan dances.
