Sarah Durn is the Atlas Obscura Editorial Fellow for 2021-22. Based in New Orleans, LA, Sarah has written for National Geographic, Smithsonian, Gizmodo, io9, Mental Floss, the AV Club, BUST, among others. She often writes stories that focus on history, especially the wacky side of medieval history. Her first book, The Beginner's Guide to Alchemy, was published by Callisto and Rockridge Press in May 2020. Sarah previously worked as Culture Trip's New Orleans writer, where she wrote and edited pieces about her adopted home. Sarah graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2017 with a self-designed major in Collaborative Storytelling and a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
Beyond her journalism work, Sarah is also a professional actor, who can be seen onscreen in the upcoming film adaption of Where The Crawdads Sing, NBC’s Chicago PD, Universal’s upcoming Renfield (2023), and Ava Duvernay's award-winning TV show Queen Sugar.
When not typing away at her computer, Sarah can often be found on the trails in City Park listening to her favorite audiobook (something by Sophia Money-Coutts) or podcast (interviews with Dolly Alderton).
