About

The Travilah Oak is one of the largest trees in the state of Maryland. It is an expansive white oak with a circumference of over 18 feet, a height of 78 feet, and a crown that stretches 108 feet.

Believed to be over 285 years old, the towering tree is flanked by a plaque that trumpets its historical significance as having stood since before the signing of the Constitution.

The celebrated tree, which escaped destruction at the hands of a construction project in 1997, is named for the first postmaster of the area where it resides, Travilah Cleggett. Each year, a festival surrounding the heritage of the local community is held on the tree's birthday.

While Travilah Oak is neither the oldest nor the largest in Maryland, it is in excellent health and may someday have the distinction of being named the Maryland State Tree, following in the footsteps of the Wye Oak (2002), Flora's Oak (2008), and the Wilmer Stone Oak.
