Once a bustling mining town, Phoenix now exists as an unused quarry now full of water. The flag pole, World War I cenotaph, and cemetery remain to alert travelers that a town was once here. The few remaining homes exist as wooden husks around the perimeter of the quarry. A slight trek by car, the local museum in Greenwood contains many pieces of history for Phoenix as the two towns were massively intertwined.
Know Before You Go
There is a road leading up to Phoenix from both Greenwood and the outskirts of Grand Forks heading towards Greenwood. The road is quite tricky and bumpy so be careful when driving or biking. Also important to be careful when hiking around the area and to come prepared as it can be quite treacherous.
