About

The Pillars of Hercules is a geological marvel that's hidden along the coastline of the beautiful island country of Antigua. These limestone pillars are formed over thousands of years of wind and crashing waves from the Atlantic Ocean.

To reach this hidden gem, one can travel by boat or hike the steep dirt trail that begins at the nearby Galleon Beach. The hike starts at the end of the small beach and treks upwards into desert-like terrain, then sharply descends while approaching the coast for some magnificent views.

Once reaching ground level, you must walk across a few hundred feet of large rocks to access the pillars. Here you are most likely to run into just a handful of local fishermen taking advantage of the peaceful serenity that surrounds them.

Know Before You Go

Entrance to the Pillars can be reached by taxi or bus from St. John's. Enter the trail via the end of Galleon Beach. Follow the trail upwards and around, then back down onto ground level where you'll find a field of rocks. Walk across the rocks a few hundred feet and you'll see the start of the pillars.
