About

The tower was one of 29 Martello towers on the east coast of England. These modest-sized defensive forts were constructed to defend the country against invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte. The tower was constructed from around 750,000 London Clay bricks transported by barge. The walls are thick enough to withstand oncoming fire and around 10 meters high.

Today, the fort is home to a gallery and heritage space that hosts regular events, talks, and exhibitions. Keep an eye on the website to check out upcoming events, or simply swing by to see the view from the rooftop, which once held held three sea-facing cannons.
