Sonoran Hot Dog
This beloved piece of Mexican-American fusion coats a bacon-wrapped dog in beans, mayo, and jalapeño salsa.
The Sonoran hot dog blends the best of Mexican and American street food: The meaty hot dog is wrapped in bacon, nestled in a pillowy bolillo roll, and topped with an array of condiments, including pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, jalapeño salsa, mayo, and mustard.
Some say the fusion food originated in Hermosillo, the capital of the Mexican state of Sonora (other accounts, however, say it comes from Mexico City). Eventually, word of the decadent dog spread to the United States, particularly Arizona. Vendors known as dogueros sell the hot dog from carts stationed around cities such as Tucson and Phoenix.
Some vendors may diverge from the traditional pile of condiments and opt for mushrooms, guacamole, nacho cheese, or even crushed potato chips.
