Nina Nightingale's Charm School is in session!
In this show, we're learning all about DIY Cosmetics. Whether to attract, camouflage, or intimidate, people have painted their faces since the beginning of time. Almost every society mentions it in their historic texts: Nefertiti is always depicted with eyeliner; people in China stained their fingernails as early as 3000 BCE; and Native Americans ceremoniously painted their faces for battle. You perfected your sourdough recipe; became a fantastic plant parent; and trimmed your own bangs — by the end of this episode of Charm School, you’ll be able to add homemade cosmetics to your repertoire of pandemic skill
Class Supplies, if you wish to work along:
Arrowroot, Rice, or Tapioca Flour :: store-bought is smoother, but you can also put rice in your coffee grinder
Beetroot Powder (feel free to dehydrate beets and grind those if you wish)
Cocoa Powder (be sure this has no sugar)
Containers with lids for mixing and storage
A small whisk or fork
Optional Supplies, for variations:
Turmeric Powder
Solid coconut oil
Shea butter
Petroleum jelly
Empty compacts
Rubbing alcohol
Tissues
Toothpicks or popsicle sticks

Hello! My name is Nina Nightingale and I am a professional fine artist practicing the very rare art of SILHOUETTE PORTRAITURE, in which I cut your likeness from paper with no writing instruments—simply freehand drawing with scissors. This art of "shadow cutting" was popular before photography was made affordable. Silhouette portraiture is one part history and one part how-does-she-do-it?
