Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Peneda

São Bento do Canto, Portugal

This chapel is the site of a yearly pilgrimage that originated during the Middle Ages.

Driving up the mountains through the mist, this magnificent chapel looms over visitors as they park their vehicle in Peneda-Gerês National Park.

According to local lore, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared at the site of the chapel to a young shepherd. The current sanctuary was constructed during the 18th or 19th-century. The chapel has since been a pilgrimage destination during the first week of September.

In front of the church is a stairway lined by statues that represent the virtues of Faith, Charity, and Glory. The chapel contains a garden and there is also a waterfall next to the church.

Know Before You Go

On the N202(-3), take the exit at Porto Ribeiro and follow the winding road to the chapel. Be careful, as there are frequently wild horses and cows on the roadway. Be sure to also visit the souvenir shop which contains a great selection of local produce.
