In Madrid, the city council finished removing phone booths in 2002, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the television broadcast of the film “La cabina.” A 35 minute short film that follows a man who has become inextricably locked inside a newly installed red phone booth.
The Madrid city council wanted to commemorate this moment by placing a replica of the cabin seen in the film in an area adjacent to the actual filming location.
La Cabina (The Phone Booth) is a 1972 television movie directed by Spanish director Antonio Mercero. When it first aired on Spanish television it became an instant success.
It not only went on to win the first-ever Emmy for a Spanish TV film, but it also became a breakthrough for Mercero, who later created other commercial hits with series such as Verano Azul or Farmacia de Guardia.
