About

Cascada Cailor (Horses Waterfall), located near Borșa ski resort in northern Romania, is the second-highest in Romania (after Scurtele Waterfall from Godeanu Mountains), with a cumulative height of approximately 240 meters.

The water collected in a glacial cirque plunges down over a steep limestone mighty rock called Piatra Rea, a natural reserve within the boundaries of Rodna Mountains National Park.

From its 10 steps, the last two ones (35 and 45 meters high, respectively) form the best-known part of the waterfall, with few people knowing about the rest of the cascade.

According to an ancient legend, the name of the waterfall comes from a strange story: Centuries ago, during a heavy storm, a herd of horses was cornered by a bear on the edge of the abyss where the waterfall starts. Because of poor visibility and being extremely frightened by the bear, the horses jumped into the abyss.

Horses Waterfall is most spectacular in the spring, when the water level is highest, and in the winter, when the place becomes an impressive ice waterfall.

Know Before You Go

The best way to reach the waterfall is from Borsa Ski Resort, talking the chair-lift to Runcu Știol and then following a 30 minutes trail through the woods. The second option is to follow the track marked with red triangle (about two hours).
