Atop an icy plateau, these 12 concrete cubes punch through the stark landscape. The only structure for miles, this installation can’t be missed from the winding mountain pass.

This is Heavier Mountain, a piece of art by local artist Davíð fra Davíðsstaðir. It represents native residents of East Iceland and their relationship to the region’s long, dark winters. Originally, a television sat on each cube, but all that remains are the cubes themselves and Davíðsstaðir’s artist statement.

The monument lies about 16 kilometers from Seydisfjordur, a seaside town that is popular during the summer months.

Know Before You Go

Use caution when visiting Heavier Mountain. Route 93 is known to be treacherous in the winter, and is often closed due to poor conditions. However, the road is paved and well-marked. Parking is available next to the monument.
