Grange-over-Sands, England

Abandoned for over 20 years, this art deco seaside swimming pool is a magnificent waste.

Built in 1932, this once-glorious seaside outdoor pool has been left to rot for over 25 years. The lido—a type of an open-air public pool that was popular in 1930s England—was originally filled with saltwater from nearby Morecambe Bay. Adorned with art deco designs, it’s a treat to imagine how the lido must have looked in its heyday.

In the first half of the 20th century, the coastal village of Grange-over-Sands was a popular seaside resort, known for the beautiful lido along its promenade. Wandering around the site today, you can find deck chairs, lockers, complimentary soapboxes, and other rusting remnants of this place, which has been abandoned since 1993.

The views on the outside are spectacular too. On one side of the bay you can see the seaside town of Morecambe, and on the other, the lake district mountains. The location itself is worth a visit, and if you get the chance to visit the abandoned lido, you are in for a double treat. There are ongoing petitions to reopen the lido as a community space, so if you want to take a look before it gets taken over, get there pronto.

Know Before You Go

The lido is boarded up and not open to the public but can be seen from the busy promenade. You can park just up the hill on any of the roads, or it's a ten-minute walk from the car park on Kents Bank Road in town. Take Clair House Lane (signposted to the promenade) adjacent to Cedric Walk to reach the lido.
