About

At a height of three meters, the Easterhouse Phoenix is a public art sculpture found in the Eastern Glasgow suburb of Easterhouse. It's constructed from galvanized mild steel and the artist Andy Scott was commissioned by the Blairtummock Residents' Association with the proposal of creating a symbol of hope for the nearby housing schemes.

It was unveiled to the public in 2001 and the work has become a favorite among the local residents. When asked about the idea behind this particular work, Scott stated “The community wanted a sculpture to act as a prominent landmark on the approach road. After years of decline, the area has been transformed and the community has adopted my design as the emblem for a local school. It was a great project to work on. I enjoy getting out of my studio and meeting people who really want to make a difference in their community."

Scott has gathered a reputation across Scotland for his many striking pieces of public art. Other similar examples of his work include The Kelpies and The DunBear. He graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art Sculpture and has commissioned many contemporary structures for both public and private groups.
