About

At the site of the former East Rome Train Depot in Rome, Georgia, you can find the tombstone for Brownie the Depot Dog.

According to one local, Brownie was a stray dog who showed up at the train depot in the late 1920s or 1930s. He charmed the people working there and was adopted by H.B. Siegel, the yardmaster at the time. Brownie was said to have learned the train schedule and would step out to greet passengers with a wagging tail as their trains pulled into the station.

After Brownie passed, this small marble gravestone was erected in his honor in 1941. Though the depot is long gone, Brownie's memorial remains.
