Built between late 1846 and 1847, the tower advertised to maritime travelers that they were now entering the commercial empire of a London stockbroker named Benjamin Boyd.
Boyd was a Scottish entrepreneur who became a major shipowner, banker, grazier, politician, and slaver.Â
