Audrey Hepburn is one of the best-known, most beloved stars of Old Hollywood cinema, an Oscar winner, fashion icon, and Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF—an all-around legend.

Though she is closely associated with Hollywood, she was not American. Hepburn was British, but born at 48 Rue Keyenveld in Ixelles—an upscale neighborhood in Brussels, Belgium—on May 4, 1929. Throughout Hepburn’s childhood, she lived in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands.

Today, the house where the legendary actress was born is a private residence occupied by new tenants, but on its wall is a golden plaque commemorating her birthplace. Opposite the house, there is also a mural made in her honor in 2013, titled “Breakfast at Ixelles.”

After her illustrious Hollywood career, Hepburn retired in 1968. Retreating from Hollywood, she lived the rest of her life in the picturesque town of Tolochenaz, a Swiss village a few miles from Morges. After she died in 1993, Hepburn was buried there, in a humble grave in the local cemetery.
