Acorn coffee, a hot, caffeine-free beverage brewed from nuts, is a cherished Lithuanian tradition. By one account, people got the idea to make it after seeing wild boars thrive on the acorns abundant in the countryside.
To make the drink, cooks first soak the shelled acorns in milk to soften them. Then they sautée and finely grind the nuts. This powder is stirred together with hot water and milk, resulting in a light brown brew with a smooth, nutty taste.
Acorn coffee is one of several caffeine-free coffee alternatives popular in Lithuania, including burdock root coffee, dandelion root coffee, and hawthorn seed coffee.
