About

White Rabbit Gallery holds what some consider to be the most significant collection of contemporary Chinese art in the world. The gallery, which opened in 2009, is dedicated to spotlighting works made within the 21st century.

There are now over 2,500 pieces made by nearly 500 artists within its collection. However, given its limited physical space, the gallery can only showcase a portion of its vast expanse of prized pieces at any given time. It typically shows two new exhibitions each year, and temporary closes while shuffling around its display.

Judith Neilson, the owner of White Rabbit Gallery, was inspired to create the gallery after taking a trip to Beijing. She’s hand-picked each piece within the collection, selecting only those she connects with. Neilson, who is part of one of Australia’s wealthiest families, opened the gallery to bring Chinese modern art to the public.

The gallery is housed within a building that served as a Rolls-Royce service depot in the 1940s and has since been completely remodeled to suit the art. There’s also a library stocked full of books about contemporary Chinese art and a small tea house that offers refreshments such as Chinese tea and dumplings.
