In 2018, a century after the end of World War I, a small town near Wakefield honored its dead with a 20-foot sculpture of a horse composed of wood.

Around 353 soldiers from Featherstone died during the war. Crosses located around the horse to honor the soldiers were also accompanied by a small tree. The memorial is entitled “War Horse, A Place of Peace To Be Together,” and was made possible with a £50,000 grant.

Crafted by artist Cod Steaks, the idea for the site stemmed from research undertaken locally, primarily from a local history book, “Featherstone in the First World War.” The site can be found between Streethouse and Featherstone.

Know Before You Go

The local town council has been granted permission by the adjacent rugby club, the Featherstone Lions, to use their car parking facilities. From the car park, either walk along the side of the club buildings and follow the path to the area, or walk out of the car park and follow the main road.
