About

Since 2010, Indianapolis residents and visitors have been able to enjoy contemporary artwork against the backdrop of unruly nature at the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.

The park brings together the great outdoors with site-specific art installations that invite visitors to examine the unique relationship between art and the natural world. No “stay off the sculpture” signs will be found here, as many of the installations aim to draw visitors to the artwork; first to climb or touch them, then to play on or around them, and lastly, to reflect on their meaning.

Walking through the park, visitors will find winding trails that lead to deep woodlands, dreamy meadows, and the shore of a 35-acre lake. Guests may even come across a “Play Patch” where they are invited to create art of their own using the natural materials around them, such as sticks, stones, or mud.

The park also serves as a bird watcher’s paradise, offering several spots dedicated to its winged guests. A nesting platform sits atop a 50-foot utility pole and offers more than 20 square feet where any bird of prey can make their home. Nearby, an elaborate bird feeder plays host to many species, including golden finches, cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, woodpeckers, red-winged blackbirds, and the occasional pesky squirrel.

With 100 acres of trails, an ongoing commission of thought-provoking art, and no restrictions, there will always be something new to explore, discover, and climb on at the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park.
