About

This magnificent waterfall cascades through this unique tree fern and mountain ash tree rainforest, where visitors are rewarded with the sight of the water tumbling through tall trees and surrounding scenery. Situated in one of the lush gullies of the Tarra-Bulga National Park, this natural formation is one of the highlights of this natural area filled with interesting flora and fauna.

There is a small narrow staircase that allows visitors to take in and get close to the higher section of the waterfall. In addition to the sound of the rumbling water, eagle-eyed visitors may see and hear some of the many birds in this area including the Eastern whip bird, Lyrebird, and the Black cockatoo.

Due to the rainforest humidity, there is often a cool mist in the air that adds to the special serenity of the Tarra Falls. Due to the large areas of undisturbed eucalyptus temperate rainforest, this national park is a site of great bio-geographical significance.

The falls occur along the Tarra River, which is named for Charlie Tarra (sometimes spelled as Charley Tera), a guide and bush tracker from the Gundungurra Burra Burra tribe. In the Australian Aboriginal language, the name for the river is Blindit'yin.
