This nuclear power plant was designed with the capability to power most of Long Island. However, following the disasters on Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, public opposition forced the local power company to halt operations. It was only utilized as an auxiliary station for about a year and could only be powered to about five percent capacity. The facility was also featured in the 2012 film, The Dictator.
