About

People come from all over the world to enjoy the scenic, rugged beauty and excellent seafood of Maine’s Mount Desert Island. What they often do not expect is one of the best collections of classic cars in the country. For those that happen to be driving along Tremont Road on the west side of the island, they will find a gem of a museum.

The Seal Cove Auto Museum was founded by Richard Paine to display his growing collection of classic cars. The collection features a wide array of vehicles, including a three-wheeled 1886 Benz, one of the first motor vehicles ever built. The museum often hosts long-term themed exhibitions that focus on different aspects of automotive history.

In addition to its wide collection of cars, the museum also features several exhibits on the developmental history of cars. For example, there is an old Jones Live Map, a pre-GPS device that gave live directions by tracking the car’s odometer and providing instructions at key forks in the road. Whether you are a car enthusiast or just a regular driver, visitors are certain to come out of Seal Cove with a little more automotive knowledge.
