This sculpture created from stainless steel is dedicated to the composer Benjamin Britten, who would walk along Aldeburgh Beach in the afternoons.

The giant metal scallop was made by artist Maggi Hamblin. It is 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall, and is made up of two interlocking scallop shells, each broken, the upright shell being pierced by the words, “I hear those voices that will not be drowned,” taken from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes.
