Located a short walk from Sarajevo City Hall, on the river, this unique personal exhibit is constructed and maintained by survivors of the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s. It is presented to educate visitors to the city of the daily struggles faced by civilians and defenders.

The museum is run by a family who survived the Siege of Sarajevo. Lasting nearly four years, it was the longest siege in modern history. The city’s population suffered terribly under the blockade by the Bosnian Serb forces. Food supplies and medicine ran low as water, electricity, and heat were disconnected, while the city was constantly bombarded. More than 13,000 lives were lost over the course of the siege.

The exhibits include interactive examples of real equipment and replicas of shelters and bunkers. There are genuine stories from survivors including those who run the museum. You can read about the human spirit during their 1,425 days under siege.

Guided tours are not permitted and visitors are encouraged to donate to its ongoing maintenance on a voluntary basis.

Know Before You Go

This a free museum and is not staffed. CCTV is monitored for security and donations boxes are present along with bank details for contributions. Guided tours do not go here. From city hall, facing the cable cars leading up Trebević walk across Sehercehaja Bridge and over the square. Follow the road up Avdage Šahinagića and you will see the museum on your left at the junction after about five minutes.
