About

Each year, tens of thousands of people flock to Olympia, Washington, on the fourth Saturday in April to experience the joy and grandeur of The Procession of the Species. Imagine a huge party attended by lions, bees, roses, and whales, and you might begin to see a little part of what the Procession of the Species is like.

Not only does the vibrant parade celebrate Earth Day, it also raises awareness of endangered species. Participants try to outdo their previous regalia while paying tribute to animal, insect, and plant species of the world.  The unfettered delight, enthusiasm, and creativity are contagious.

The whole affair is a celebration of art and the local community, too. Many of the floats and costumes used in the parade are made in the Procession Studio, a free art space full of donated, natural, and recycled materials. Celebrants arrive excited and ready to entertain, dance, play music, and cycle through the streets.
