About

These well-maintained ruins scattered around the north-central province of Sri Lanka are all that remains of the former Sinhalese capital. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, the ancient city was the second capital city of Sri Lanka. It has structures dating back to the 12th century. There are foundations of palaces, council chambers, royal baths, temples, shrines, and plenty of rock sculptures of Buddha to see.

Know Before You Go

The ancient city is a little spread out. It is suggested to rent a bicycle to get you around inside the city. The bike rental and ticket booth is near the south west corner of the ruin complex. You will find the bike rentals right across the main road from the entrance station. Remove your shoes before entering some of the historic monuments.
