About

Atop the iconic Parvati Hill in the center of Pune is a temple complex. Next to the temple, across the courtyard is a palace which is now a museum. This building used to be the Peshwa Palace, built by Nanasaheb Peshwa in 1795. Today, a part of this palace houses a museum with a fantastic collection of artifacts from the Peshwa Era.

The museum displays weaponry, jewelry, clothing, furniture, musical instruments, riding attire, locks, utensils, and other objects that belonged to the Peshwas. There are old paintings of Pune along the walls and the stairs, displaying the historical side of the city. There is a detailed Peshwa family tree along with maps and paintings of Shaniwar Wada (the capital building / fortification and the seat of the Peshwa governance in Pune). Paintings of important figures are displayed in their full glory.

The museum also displays a large collection of coins and currencies from various periods of Indian history and from across various regions: The Chola Dynasty, The Peshwa Era, The Mughal Dynasty, The Portuguese Era, The British Era, etc.

Outside the museum, from across the temple complex, one can get a beautiful view of Pune as it is one of the highest points in the city. The museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and others who want to explore the Peshwa Era and life in those times.
