About

A group of six wind turbines huddled together in Laakdal, Belgium, the Nike Laakdal Wind Park is comprised of RePower MD77s with 1,500 kw of generation capacity. Each turbine was built in 2006 and has a rotor diameter of 77 meters. They are installed on steel lattice towers that stand 111.5 meters tall.

What makes this Wind Park special is that instead of being hidden away and out of sight, it is right in the middle of town, with roads running underneath the legs of the steel framework. The road is so wide - and the cut-out in the framework so large - that heavy trucks can comfortably pass through.

Just a quick note from my visit in that area. As I stayed at the Radisson Blu Park Lane Hotel I had enough spare time between a few meetings and in the evening to discover the surroundings. I initially heard about this Wind Park by some friends who visited Belgium recently. Thanks to Google Maps to actually inform me that I was only 53km away from it. An amazing discovery. The turbines are almost looking at you!
