Walking in from the Phoenix straat through the gate, you wouldn’t expect to find a peaceful garden and 14th-century monastery. But here, tucked right behind some modern buildings, is the Museum Prinsenhof Delft.

The museum has a lovely garden and interesting exhibitions about Dutch history, culture and the famous Delftware. But the true reason why every Dutch child learns about this building is because this is where the founder of the Dutch nation, William the Silent, lived and was assassinated. There is an exhibition about his life and death and the bullet holes can still be seen on the wall, albeit a lot bigger than originally, due to centuries of Dutch children sticking their fingers in them.

Know Before You Go

Delft has a small medieval city center which is really not car friendly. Use a parking garage or better, public transport. It is an 8 minute walk from the train station or you can take Tram 1.
Don't forget to get your free cup of coffee or tea at Stads-Koffyhuis (Oude Delft 133) or Bakker Suikerbuik (Hippolytusbuurt 24) when you go into the town center.
