Mudlark Oddities
A hidden gem full of oddities, curiosities and macabre antiques.
At the top of the frame: an old South African giraffe skeleton TheCellarGremlin (Atlas Obscura User)
Tucked away just off of 65th St and down a flight of stairs is a little oddities shop packed with all manner of bizarre items. Show up for Otto, the real human skeleton that was used in 1800s Odd Fellows rituals, and stay for the live medicinal leeches swimming around in apothecary jars.
In between old gothic candelabras, you’ll find a curated collection of antique books on the occult, handmade jewelry containing bones, a selection of weird local art, massive preserved insects, European taxidermy, funky vintage kitsch and Soviet posters. You can wander around this little space for hours and still notice new odd items.
Know Before You Go
From 65th St, head south down 22nd Ave just 10 yards or so. Look for a basement-level mural with a large eye.
