About

Tucked away in the high desert, this museum offers a glimpse into the rugged lives and quirky stories of the Morongo Basin’s early settlers. It is located in the historic Landers home, named after the community’s founders, and serves as a testament to the area’s rich and colorful history.

On display in the museum is a collection of artifacts and archives that tell the story of the region’s development, spanning from the 1880s to today. From tools and textiles to photographs and personal mementos, the exhibits weave a rich tapestry of life in the high desert. Unique attractions include The Moharve Mercantile, a vintage-style grocery store brimming with cowboy movie memorabilia. Visitors can also explore the restored Original Landers Post Office and even peek inside an original homesteader’s cabin for a taste of life in the early days of the community.

The museum grounds include gardens filled with native desert plants, bottle art, and sculptures that reflect the creative spirit of the Morongo Basin. Visitors can explore at their own pace with self-guided tours or engage with friendly volunteer docents, who share fascinating tales of desert life—including stories about the Landers Turtle races, or the UFO Conventions at Giant Rock. Other highlights include exhibits honoring veterans, natural history and an authentic midcentury modern kitchen.
