Levitating Stone of Shivapur

According to legend, a Sufi saint decreed that 11 men can lift this roughy 150-pound stone with only their index fingers upon invoking his name.

About

Seven centuries ago, Qamar Ali was reportedly born into a family of Muslim bodybuilders. Despite this familial heritage, Ali is said to have been more interested in reading and religion. After studying Sufi Muslim mysticism at a young age, Ali became known in the region for his supposed healing powers.

On his deathbed, Ali supposedly willed that a stone weighing roughly 150 pounds (70 kilograms) be placed near his tomb, which today marks a Muslim shrine. Ali declared that 11 men could lift and toss the stone into the air with only their index fingers, provided they invoke his name, proving that belief is stronger than physical strength.

Today, devotees make pilgrimages to the shrine to perform this feat. They report that the stone feels much lighter than expected upon lifting it. On the other hand, Skeptics suggest that the weight is not as difficult to lift when distributed among nearly a dozen people.

Despite his rumored healing powers, Ali reportedly died in his late teens.

Know Before You Go

Women are not invited to lift the stone or enter the shrine.
