About

Located in the middle of LASALLE College of the Arts (Rochor campus) in Singapore is a remarkable stretch of astroturf known to students as "The Frass." Nestled between a pair of ultra-modern buildings that seem to be two halves of a single, divided whole, it's a sci-fi vision of a relaxing lawn.

The green grassy patch is an outdoor space that is fully sheltered, where visitors can enjoy some fresh air without soaking in the heat of the Singapore sun.  Don't worry about that (pesky) tropical humidity:  there is often a cooling breeze that passes through the corridor.

The Frass is open to the public and receives visitors of all kinds. Common sights at the Campus Green include little kindergarten tots having field trips there and even LASALLE dance students practicing their routines or doing stretches. For the most part, however, the school students use the space to have discussions or do their studies. It's also the school's main venue to host formal events, with a two-step stage located at one end of the field.

The oddly angular buildings that envelop The Frass, which won the local President's Design Award in 2008, are just as fascinating. You really can't miss these great pieces of architecture. It often confuses uninformed passersby who are drawn to the building thinking it's a shopping mall, and who could blame them? After all, it's an eye-grabbing and unconventional space nestled in the bustling shopping city that is Singapore.
