About

Lake Tyrrell is located in Victoria's Mallee region, a short distance from the Calder Highway and a little over six miles (11 kilometers) north of the town of Sea Lake. There is a viewing platform and an information bay overlooking Victoria's largest salt lake covering more than 20,ooo hectares.

One of the main attractions for visitors to this lake are the unique salt formations that form on the lake bed. At night, the lake provides the perfect environment to view the constellations of the southern hemisphere.

The environment around the lake is home to Mallee reptiles, kangaroos, emus, and White-fronted-chats. The lake also happens to be one of the largest breeding grounds for seagulls in the region. The surrounding saltbush and samphire also play host to countless animal species.

Know Before You Go

If traveling north on the Calder Highway, the signpost for the lake is on the right-hand side. There is a viewing platform and information bay at the lake.

Lake Tyrrell is dry most of the year, although at times, it may be covered by shallow water. Lake Tyrrell offers unique opportunities to view sunsets, sunrises, and stars, however, visitors are warned not to drive on the lake bed.
