What’s a county to do when its oldest house is slated for demolition? In the case of Harford County, Maryland, the answer involved moving said house piece by piece to a new location, 11 miles away, and rededicating it as a visitor’s center.

That’s exactly what happened in 2016 with the historic Joesting-Gorsuch House, which served as a farmhouse, family home, and golf pro shop before being moved from Winters Run Golf Course in Bel Air to its new home in Street.

Originally built in the late 1700s, and augmented in the 1800s, the frame house still retains the farm-like aesthetics of its days as an agricultural homestead.

Nowadays, the visitor’s center hosts a rotating series of exhibits highlighting the county’s history as a major player in the cannery industry, including various types of canned vegetables boasting various reproduced labels from some of the top local brands that were sold in the region. There are also old farming implements and other farm-related paraphernalia to help visitors understand the history of Harford County.

Know Before You Go

Joesting-Gorsuch House stands adjacent to an agribusiness incubator called "The Grove," that is home to various shops and businesses. There are occasional events with live music and food vendors.
