Jack Leslie started playing for Plymouth Argyle Football Club (also known as the Pilgrims) in 1921 and quickly established himself as one of their top goal scorers. On October 5, 1925, Jack became the first Black player to be selected for the England international football team. However, within days he was dropped from the squad, allegedly due to the color of his skin.
This incredible statue of Jack by sculptor Andy Edwards was unveiled on October 7, 2022. It was an emotional ceremony for everyone, especially Jack’s family, who had tirelessly campaigned to get a statue erected. The Football Association awarded a posthumous honorary cap to Jack on the same day.
