Much of Boston’s Irish connection has disappeared over time, especially with the development of the Broadway area.

However, this extremely Republican mural still exists in Boston, just down the street from Broadway station and on the side of Al’s Bottled Liquors. The mural features a misquote of Patrick Pearse’s quote, “Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”

Part of the mural has faded, and the owner of Al’s claims that he will have it restored when the North is restored to the Republic. The quote has long been considered a call to take up arms against British forces. The mural also features the equation: “Ireland (the island)- the United Kingdom= Republic Of Ireland.”

If one is looking for the quintessential Irish experience in South Boston, certainly check out this piece of history. There’s also a Dropkick Murphy’s tribute right next to the mural.
