About

The Hopewell culture was a network of Native Americans from various groups that lived in southern Ohio from 200 B.C. to 500 A.D.

Members built earthen mounds (often in geometric patterns) over cremation sites. Artifacts such as shells, arrowheads, pipes, and copper figurines were often placed inside. Many of these objects are now on display at the British Museum.

The mounds in Chillicothe were reconstructed with input and direction from archaeologists and historians. The Ohio campus has been nominated for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Today, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is part of the Mound City Group National Monument, with six sites in Ross County Ohio. Many other Native American landmarks are also located in the region.
