Through the snaking fjords of Norway, one will find the picturesque, modern town of Haugesund. It has many beautiful monuments, including a statue of the American actress Marilyn Monroe.

You might ask, why is there a bronze Marilyn Monroe statue next to a canal in Haugesund? The town claims to be the actress’s, who was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, ancestral home, as her father, a local baker, emigrated to the United States from Haugesund.

The statue was unveiled in 1992, 30 years after her death in 1962. It depicts Monroe sitting down with her legs crossed, with one of her iconic high-heeled shoes laying next to her. She is wearing a neat dress, and is staring over her shoulder. It was created by Nils Aas, a famous Norwegian sculptor, who also designed a few of the Norwegian krone coins.
