About

The Fremantle Submarine Periscope Memorial is an interesting site of remembrance that commemorates those who served for the Royal Navy submarines out of Fremantle during World War II.

It features the original attack periscope from HMS Tabard, a British submarine that was launched in 1945. First setting sail from Greenock, Scotland, the vessel spent two years operating in the Mediterranean before being transported to Australia where it then spent eight years in operation across various missions.

The memorial was unveiled to the public on Trafalgar Day, October 1972 by Governor Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew. It sits on Monument Hill, where there are several other war memorials and tributes which can be found. The site was chosen due to the prime vantage point over Fremantle and the Indian Ocean beyond.
