Since the botanical garden of Chapultepec opened its doors, Patricia ElĂas Calles has tried to raise awareness among the population about various environmental issues. Her most phenomenal idea was to create a festival to welcome spring in one of the most sought-after areas of Mexico City.

Polanco is an area known for its elegant restaurants and its branded stores. The festival consists of inviting businesses to create facades with floral arrangements inspired by a different ecological theme. The peculiarity lies in the creativity and imagination with which the different establishments are decorated.

At the same time, the festival is complemented by workshops, cultural activities, and other free activities. Thus, the streets are covered with colors and spring fragrances. Polanco was a luxurious neocolonial residential area of the 1930s, so the festival has also allowed people to know the old mansions that are now restaurants and galleries.

Through different networks, people can vote for their favorite façade, although what is most abundant are the selfies of the attendees. It should be mentioned that the idea of decorating facades with floral arrangements is not new in Mexico. Since the 19th-century, the neighborhood of San Angel has used flowers, grown and harvested locally in the chinampas of Xochimilco, to decorate its balconies in honor of Holy Week.

Know Before You Go

The festival takes place in early April and usually starts on Wednesday and ends on Sunday. It is best to go the first few days when the flowers are fresh and there are fewer people.
