About

The Firefighters Museum of Alcoy is, ironically enough, located in a late-19th-century textile mill that was destroyed by fire in 1985.

The museum is mainly devoted to the ancient history of fighting fires, but the first few exhibits relate to the history of the local textile industry and the mill itself. The exhibits include loads of artifacts, including a number of fire appliances and firefighting equipment; the large fire engine exhibits were lifted into the building by crane before the roof was replaced.

The restored mill is worth a visit in its own right, and outside there are remnants of the hydraulic engineering that provided water power to the mill when it was first built. Also interesting here is a section of glass floor revealing the original stone floor of the 19th-century mill.

In keeping with the locality, as you enter you are greeted with a giant Playmobil firefighter and a display of the Playmobil fire brigade. The Playmobil toy factory and Iberian headquarters are located just a few miles south of the town.
