Dunyvaig Castle

Dunyvaig Castle is located on the southern coast of the Scottish island Islay. The remains of the structure are believed to date to the 16th century, but historic records show that there has been a castle at this site as far back as the 12th century.

Islay is an island steeped in history and folklore, and Dunyvaig Castle is one of the most important historic sites on the island. It was once a naval base of the Lord of the Isles, chiefs of Clan Donald.

The site sits on a rocky outcrop that juts into Lagavulin Bay, and it’s thought that the original site held an Iron Age fort. Many years of clan sieges and transfers in ownership of the land followed until the castle was pulled to the ground by Sir Hugh Campbell.

The ruins remain in remarkable condition and the site includes the 16th-century castle, a 13th-century courtyard, and a 15th-century keep.
