Help improve Atlas Obscura by expanding The Devil's Column with additional information or photos.
Just outside the Saint Ambrose church in Milan, stands a white marble column with two prominent holes at the base.
According to the legend, the Devil tried to seduce Ambrose into temptation. Frustrated by the indifference of the holy man, the Devil hit the column with the head, piercing the marble with his horns. If you use your imagination you can still smell the sulfur and by leaning close, hear the sounds of hell.
