Crookston School

This former school is now abandoned and a canvas for graffiti artists.

The Crookston School was an educational institution for children of the former mining town of Wallyford. Established during the late 19th-century, it was the home of the World War I Crookston Memorial, which has since been relocated.

The school itself was abandoned around the 1970s, after which it fell into disrepair and was soon covered in graffiti. In 2015 and 2017, the ruins were damaged by arsonists.

However, given its location on the site of the historical 16th-century Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, its grounds have long been in consideration for a future visitor/heritage center to showcase the history of the battle. As of late 2020, the proposal remains unconfirmed but active.

It’s not yet known if any of the existing school structures would be kept as part of the future center, so limited time might remain to visit the current graffiti showcase.
