About

The marital home of former Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley and his wife Elizabeth houses some intriguing artifacts. This model plane is one such object.

In 1946, Ben Chifley was presented with a model DC3 airplane to commemorate the first civilian air service in Bathurst, Australia. The plane’s registration letters "VH–JBC" include his initials. The top of the aircraft opens to reveal a leather lined compartment for a pipe, matches, and tobacco, making it the perfect gift for Chifley! The plane's pipe and matches are still in place and can be seen in the Dining Room of Chifley Home.
