About

On the eastern side of Gran Canaria, water regularly shoots through the rocks at a site known as Bufadero la Granita. There are two large holes in the rocks, which are filled and emptied by crashing waves.

The cavities extend throughout the rock. When the tide comes in and the openings are filled, the pressure forces water through a small opening in the rock, creating a spectacular display as water sprays many feet in the air. As the underground opening fills and empties, it creates a distinctive sound that some have called the "heartbeat of the ocean."

The blowhole is next to Playa de la Garita, a wide beach with soft, dark sand colored by volcanic deposits.
