Ghosts, Graves, and a Giant Bee: 7 Must-See Sites in Savannah

Myths, memorials, and monuments

Beneath Savannah’s sweeping live oaks is a city layered in lore. From gravemarkers embedded in an airport runway to ghostly sightings of long-gone loved ones and a massive bronze bee that signifies the city’s industrious spirit, the port city is full of fascinating sites.

The cemeteries are a good place to start. The oldest, a historic site dating to 1750, is known for its grossly mismarked memorials, the lasting product of a Civil War prank, while the famously haunted Bonaventure Cemetery is the final resting place of Gracie Watson, who died at age 6. As legend has it, the ghost of “Little Gracie” has been seen frolicking about the grounds in a white dress. Apparitions have also been reported at “The Waving Girl” sculpture. The bronze statue honors the memory of a beloved Savannahian who, for 44 years, greeted ships at the riverfront. The city erected a sculpture in her honor, and some say her handkerchief can be seen blowing in the wind.

Savannah is full of fascinating and historic monuments, memorials, and gravesites. Here are 7 you won’t want to miss.
